The Skipper
Model 125
The Model 125 was marketed as one of Johnson’s
“budget models”, in the same vein as the 088, 89, and 98. The drag system for
these is a thumb knob that turns a setscrew. This setscrew pushes against a
plate, which causes friction against the spool. There’s no calibration with
these, just keep turning toward “+” until there’s pressure against the spool.
This reel is built around the one piece plastic chassis.
The two variations are mostly alike mechanically.
The only difference is in appearance. Var. 1 has a lighter, more fluorescent
green lettering, white crank handle, oversized line grommet, plain drag knob,
and metal spool. Var. 2 has dark green lettering, black crank handle, small
line grommet, arrow embossed drag knob, and a plastic spool. Var. 2 also has
a taper turned into the shaft.
The covers are not interchangeable.
The reasons for the variations have yet to be
authenticated. We will assume them to be “official” factory variations as
transition units etc., though there is a high possibility that they are the
result of subsequent repairs using whatever materials were provided. Follow
the links on the left to read about each model.
If you have a variant not listed, or have reasons
to prove any to be false, please contact Justin Crouse at justinc@vintagejohnsonreels.com.
