The 088
The “088” is named after
the patent it was introduced under (#2828088), which was filed on Apr. 15,
1954 and issued on Mar. 25, 1958. It is represented as an improvement of the
Century. It comes off as a combination of the early “Sidewinder” models and
the Century. If anyone has information on this reel, please contact Justin
Crouse at justinc@vintagejohnsonreels.com.
As far as we currently know, there are three models of 088. (see bottom of
the page for pics of the later
two)
The 088 has a black,
all-plastic housing. The artwork is molded into the plastic side plate, which
does not detach from the case assembly. The cover is plastic with a grooved
grip (left). A star drag wheel threaded on the crankshaft assembly controls
the drag. It has the same single, round black plastic handle as Var. 2 of the
100A. The cap nut that holds the handle to the
crankshaft is taller than the Century in order to accommodate the longer
length introduced due to the drag wheel. The white, plastic push button has
raised ridges (see photos below for more detail).
The rotor has scalloped
edges for line pickup. The “clicker” used to gauge drag is mounted to the
inside of the rotor (left). The crankshaft has a one-way anti-reverse plate,
and the flat for mating the handle is machined into the entire length
(right). This is because the crankshaft assembly can be reconfigured for left
handed anti-reverse functionality.
The spool is hollowed
out-the reason for this is unclear-and has a fixed pin which mates with a
groove on the case assembly keeping it from spinning. The drag is achieved
through rotational tension on the rotor, rather than on the spool as in other
models (left). A Teflon sleeve on the front face of the spool prevents line
fraying (right).
As mentioned before, the
spool is fixed by a pin into a groove of the case assembly, and a copper “C”
clip holds it tight against the all-plastic bearing (left). The view on the
right details the scalloped edge of the rotor.
The reverse stop is on a
swivel attached to the bearing side plate (left). The aluminum foot of the
reel attaches to the case assembly with two screws on the bottom (right).
